At age 21 Makhaola Moshoeshoe ‘Mosh’ of Thabana Morena in Mafeteng is still schooling but has already set his mind beyond the classroom. “What I study at school does not determine how I should live, instead, I see the two as one and the same thing.” Mosh is a fashion model under Tgee Modelling Agency, doing his first year in Marketing at Lerotholi Polytechnic. He says both modelling and his course in marketing are one thing because with marketing, he deals with promotions, advertising and selling. “On the other hand, the role of a fashion model is to do all of them for a particular brand.”

Since he loved fashion and style, he realised his potential in modelling in 2017. His friend who also noticed his talent and that he could make the best fashion model introduced him to the agency and “I appreciated it as I realised this was how I could support the local fashion. He says: “what I like doing most on my social media platform is to promote local events and brands because I think it is wise to support our locals and make them recognised, since no one can make them grow if not us.”

Although modelling is considered different from dancing, he sees the two similar, because one can promote a certain product through dancing. Again as a dancer, one can be an ambassador of a certain clothing brand. Besides modelling, Mosh also performs as a Master of Ceremony (MC), which he does at most formal and casual events, especially those that are attended by youth. He enjoys every single minute he is behind the microphone. He says being the MC, “talking in front of many people is not easy, unless one is confident enough. Then everything becomes simple.”

The appreciation, responses and compliments he gets after every show he hosts are a certificate that he does well. As for the significance of modelling as a career in a third world country like Lesotho, Mosh believes the market is untapped and says some local brands can be promoted via models exhibiting them to local and international markets, or raise awareness of brands to the audiences, thus improving the local brands’ sales and improve the country’s economy.

“Again, modelling can put the country on the map. As one of the local models will be going to Paris Fashion Show - the only lady from the Southern Sahara countries to be part of European based show  it is going to expose Lesotho to the world whereupon it will earn recognition when other countries see what we are made of,” Mosh argues. Mosh advices young people who want to show their talent that they should start now, and that they do not have to be great to start, but must start in order to be great, and “should not wait for someone to come and tell them what they are capable of doing. They must have confidence in themselves.”

Tgee Modelling Agency, according to one of the directors, a coordinator and a senior model ’Mamoshao Makhele, supports every single performance by Mosh. The agency, she says, “is a platform where beauty queens and kings of Lesotho are recruited to model their talent, boost their confidence, self-esteem and give them moral support in order for them to consider modelling their defined    careers.” With Mosh and other fashion models, Tgee aims to invest time and develop their talent so that they advance their prominence within the modelling industry, “and we want to see modelling appreciated in Lesotho as that will ensure that models earn a living through their modelling career.”

According to Makhele, Mosh is one of the energetic, active and easy to direct model who is on the right path. “He has compassion. He is an influencer and he perfectly matches any fashion he displays. Apart from being a hard-worker, he has become skilled in fashion basics hence I foresee plenty of success if he stays focussed,” she observes. With both modelling and MC roles, Mosh has the ambition to see himself being an MC abroad one day, hosting bigger shows, and as a model he dreams about plying his trade in Paris as it is considered the Fashion Capital of the world.
