In an effort to instil love of nature at young age, Care for Basotho Association (CBA) has established environment clubs in at least two primary schools of Mokhotlong. Themed on the celebration of Earth Day, Refiloe Nthako, the CBA Project Field Monitor, said that the campaign to introduce environment club had been successful in Libibing  and Mapholaneng primary schools and the intention is to reach more schools with the same objective. She pointed out that the motive behind establishing environment clubs in schools is to help pupils to understand the importance of environment in human life and also learn about how to protect it for future generations. It is through this initiative, according to Nthako that a sense of knowledge among pupils that human life is part of environment, hence the importance of taking measures to conserve natural vegetation and restore an ecosystem, could be instilled. She said: “The idea to engage pupils in such an initiative is also to instil the sense of leadership and responsibility on promoting clean environment. Among other things that we are going to be more focused on is to make schools identify and run their own environmental protection projects at their respective school surroundings, and also engage in environment debates.” She said the pupils would also examine ways of how they use environment pollutants to run some recycling projects as part of encouraging sustainability of their projects. “Clean environment is the source of healthy life. Our vision is to see a full recovery of natural vegetation and that is possible only if everyone understand the role they have to play. Among the environmental protection projects we are conducting includes wetlands restoration in various parts of Mokhotlong and range lands rehabilitation and protection,” she explained. Countries celebrated Earth Day on April 22 with the aim to remind people that the earth and its ecosystems provide human beings with life and sustenance. Earth Day provides an opportunity for stakeholders in environment protection to raise public awareness around the world to the challenges regarding the well-being of the planet earth and all the life it supports.
