Lesotho's Prime Minister (PM) Dr. Thomas Thabane says malnutrition and stunting have been a serious problem for a long time in Africa and Lesotho is not an exception. These were his remarks when delivering at a speech at a high level forum on nutrition held in Thaba Bosiu, Maseru on yesterday (Wednesday).

Dr. Thabane said, in Lesotho, the annual cost of malnutrition for children under the age of five is M1. 9 billion, which is equivalent to 7% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) saying this challenge has a negative impact on the health and development agenda of the country. He however stated that despite the challenge, the country has not lost hope and they are encouraged by the fact that King Letsie III is the Nutrition Champion for Africa. He pointed out that there is need therefore to invest in nutrition to address the challenge and have healthy children in Africa.

The Prime Minister commended all who attended the forum, saying their contribution will help in improving the early childhood nutrition for children under the age of five and achieving human capital development in Africa. Also speaking at the event was the Vice President of Zambia, Mrs. Inonge Wina who emphasized on the need for a multi-sectoral approach to improve nutrition for children under the age of five. She said the first 1,000 days of nutrition of children is vital when done properly. “Children will grow and develop well and the issue of stunting and malnutrition will be overcome,” she said.

Mrs. Wina said while the nutrition of children is being prioritised, the plight of women and girls should not be forgotten as they are the ones who play a bigger role in the nutrition of their children. She urged all to invest in nutrition for the development of the human capital in Africa. The purpose of the forum that started on Tuesday was intended to discuss ways in which governments can invest in nutrition for healthy children in Africa. Lesotho hosted the event to honour the Nutrition Championship title that was bestowed on the King since 2014 by the African Union. The event was graced by the presence of their Majesties, delegates from different countries from Southern Africa, senior government officials and experts in nutrition related issues. Lena
