QACHA’S NEK - The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Dr. Nthabiseng Makoae has promised the government’s readiness to get involved in wool and mohair production with the aim of supporting local production.

She said the government’s support, through the ministry of agriculture, would include assisting producers with barley because climate change has negatively affected and damaged grazing areas. Dr. Makoae further said the department of livestock has embarked on the registration of livestock using a unique system that would help curb stock theft.

The District Chairperson of Qacha's Nek Wool and Mohair Growers Association (QWMGA), Mr. Mothibeli Makhetha, said they were ready to win the national show to be held in Maseru on May 26, 2018. Mr. Makhetha said this during the District Small Stock Show held at St. Francis, in Tsoelike, arguing that they have been performing well and there was no doubt that even this year they would win.
He said shows of this nature were hosted to assess the quality of wool and mohair so that when it is exported it would attract good prices.
Mr. Makhetha said Qacha's Nek has the potential to produce large amounts of wool and mohair, but stock theft, especially in winter, is the impediment.
