Awarding the scholarships to the deserving students on Friday in Maseru, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the mine, Kelebone Leisanyane said the scholarships were part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
The initiative, he said was established in 2006, adding that to date, the mine had already used a total of M13 million for full package scholarships.
Mr Leisanyane, however said the mine was committed to offering the scholarships in order to help the development of natural resources throughout the country.
On behalf of the recipients, Phutheho Maphatšoe thanked the mine for the opportunity it offered them to further their studies, adding that the skills they would get would be implemented towards the development of the country.
Flora Rakeketsi, the Director of the National Manpower Development Secretariat (NMDS) applauded the mine for extending a helping hand to the Government for the betterment of education in Lesotho.

“It through the help of such companies that Basotho children are able to further their studies without the hustle of getting or expecting bursaries from the Government,” she said.
Since the inception of the Letšeng scholarships, 43 scholarships have been awarded to 48 young Basotho. Forty six of them have graduated, 25 are employed full-time at the mine, and four are on internship while two are still at school.
The Letšeng Diamond Mine is owned by Gem Diamonds, Ltd and the Government of Lesotho. LeNA
