MASERU – The national wool and mohair liaising officer, Lehlohonolo Tšehlana is concerned about the perpetual uncertainty in the sale of local wool and mohair.

Tšehlana who was recently appointed to the post was speaking last Friday at a press conference in Maseru.

He said since his appointment, he has toured places like among others Mateanong, Linotšing, Thabang, Nkotoane, Letšeng-la-terae, Mangaung, Ralefatla, Sebetia, Nokong and Thabang.

The purpose of his countrywide tours, he said is establish how the wool and mohair associations are being run.

His findings he said reveal that there is great mismanagement by associations at the shearing sheds and lack of accountability by government.

“There are several reported cases of theft of wool and mohair at shearing sheds, cases of oppressed farmers by committees and associations which do not file their financial reports,” he said.

He was, however, quick to applaud the government for assisting unpaid farmers to get their monies, saying government must find an effective way to deal with corruption within the associations.

He encouraged the government to set up a commission that will look into the reasons behind the delayed payments of farmers.
“During my tours around the country, I learned that farmers want their wool and mohair to be sold locally and not anything else,” he said.
