Maseru - The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences (DCEO) has joined a Chinese national Ming Fa Chen, 43, as the second accused in a case he and his co-accused are charged with corruption involving millions of Maloti. Chen is charged together with a Curen Chen, 56, who already appeared before court and is currently released on bail deposit of M20,000 and surety of M300,000 – cash or property in that value. According to the charges against the accused, they are on count one charged with contravening the provisions of Section 31 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption and Economic Offences Act No. 5 of 1999 as Amended by Section 17 of Act No. 8 of 2006. They are alleged to have failed to give satisfactory explanation to the DCEO on February 8, 2018 as to how and where they got M9,973,000 that is in their Standard Lesotho Bank account. They are on the second count alleged to have also failed to explain to the DCEO about some other M6,862,085.78 that is in their other account they hold with First National Bank during an incident that happened on the same abovementioned date. On the third and fourth counts, they are charged with contravening the provisions of Section 25 (1) (a) (i) read with Section 25 (2) of the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Act No. 4 of 2008 in that they acquired and or possessed M9,973,000 from Standard Lesotho Bank and M6,862,085.78 from First National Bank during incidents that happened between October 2016 and July 2017, knowing and having reasons to believe that such money was derived directly or indirectly from acts or omissions in Lesotho which constitute an offence against part III of Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime No. 4 of 2008 or another Law in Lesotho punishable by imprisonment of not less than 24 months. The younger Chen was also released on a bail deposit of 10,000 and surety of M50,000 – cash or property in that amount. Their case is before Chief Magistrate 'Matankiso Nthunya. Lena
