#BACHASHUTDOWN has organised a march scheduled for Friday to deliver a petition to the Leader of the National Assembly.

According to a statement released by the movement this week, the petition is intended to urge the Leader of the House and also Deputy Prime Minister Mathibeli Mokhothu to revoke the Members of Parliament (Amendment of schedule) Regulations of 2020 which entitles legislators to M5 000 tax free petrol allowance per month.
The statement says the movement delivered a letter to the Prime Minister on August 10, asking for permission to organise the march on August 20, adding that it gave Dr Moeketsi Majoro until August 13 to respond to the request.

The body shows that since he did not respond, it takes his silence as a sign of consent on his part.

“Thus we are proceeding with the protest and the march will start at Sefikeng sa Morena Moshoeshoe I to the new Parliament building on the Mpilo hill in Maseru,” the statement says.

Members of the movement have pledged to take all necessary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, adding that they wish to emphasise that their fundamental human rights as citizens are guaranteed by the Constitution.

In support of the movement, the Alliance of Democrats (AD) has apologised to the nation for voting for the petrol allowances.

AD Secretary General, Dr Mahali Phamotse said they have realised as a party that it was a mistake because they have now learnt that the money is not meant for fuel but is actually a salary hike for the MPs. LeNA
