IEC announces vacancies in parly

ACTING Director of Elections in the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Lehlohonolo Suping has announced five vacancies in the National Assembly, following the death and resignation of some of the Members of Parliament earlier this year.

In February, All Basotho Convention (ABC)’s MP for Qacha’s Nek, Dr Pontšo Sekatle resigned to become Lesotho’s ambassador to Belgium.

In the past months, four MPs including Lefu Hlomelang of 'Makhoroana, Kolo’s Putsoane Leeto, Mpalipali Molefe of 'Maliepetsane and Mohale’s Hoek’s Sentje Lebona passed on.

Three of the late parliamentarians belonged to ABC while Mr Leeto was a member of the Democratic Congress (DC).

IEC spokesman Tuoe Hantši told this publication that His Majesty King Letsie III is yet to announce the dates on which by-elections will be held in the five constituencies now left vacant.

The country is meanwhile expected to hold the next general elections sometime in 2022.
