MASERU – The Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Small Business Development, Cooperatives and Marketing, Lerata Pekane, says their task is to make policies that will develop small businesses and assist them with market support.

Mr Pekane made these remarks at the official launch of a five-day annual entrepreneurship expo and business meeting that kicked off in Maseru on Monday.

The purpose of the expo, he said, was to get people talking about business for all the right reasons.

“We are happy to see the partnership that exists between international and local partners that means the initiative is owned by the people, not by the ministry,” he said.

Commenting on this year’s theme of the event, ‘developing sustainable value changes’ the PS said over the years, several local companies had failed to bring the positive impact that was expected, but was hopeful that things would change in 2019.

The Entrepreneurs Network (TEN) expo started in 2016 and is platform used by Small Medium Enterprises (SME’s) to showcase their products and services. Over the years BEDCO and TEN have made strides towards opening the market for SME’s to showcase their products to potential buyers.

Speaking at the same occasion, the managing director of TEN, Stephen Monyamane, said this time around their focus would be on manufacturing, tourism, agriculture and technology.

Mr Monyamane said in the next expo, they should be in a position to have at least substituted imports with local products by 50 percent.
