THE Minister of Health, Semano Sekatle says the benefits of taking the COVID-19 vaccine in order to protect people from severe coronavirus related illnesses or deaths completely outweigh any potential risks.

He said recorded adverse side effects of the COVID vaccine are rare hence, the government will keep the vaccination campaigns going at all costs.

Mr Sekatle said mild to moderate side effects after taking the jab are normal signs that the body is developing protection against COVID-19.

Possible side effects, he said include a sore arm, tiredness, mild fever, body or headache, adding that these are unlikely to last more than a few days.

“These can be managed through resting, drinking plenty of fluids and medication for managing fever and pain, if necessary,” he said.

Any symptoms that persist or worsen, he said should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Mr Sekatle said the ministry is deeply saddened by the passing of five people in Leribe after they received Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 jabs.

The government through the National Expert Committee with the support of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other partners he said is investigating the incidents, adding that the team is already on the ground reviewing epidemiological facts.

“The ministry will continue monitoring the use of the COVID-19 vaccines to identify and respond to any safety issues that might arise, and through that process to assure they remain safe for use,” he said.
