LIKE their slogan goes - 're kenya hiking fashioneng', (we are making hiking fashionable), a member of the Earth-Lovers Hiking club, Sekubi Moshabesha says they entice people closer to nature while gently pushing them as far away as possible from city life.

Moshabesha who works as the club’s Sweeper says his responsibilities entail among other taking care of first-time hikers to ensure they complete their maiden trail.

For the good of a healthy lifestyle, he says it is high time nature gets well recognised, adding that bringing nature and people together has amazing healing and health benefits.

The club, he says takes hiking as a hobby and a sport, offering people an opportunity to do away with the endless stress that accompanies their lives.

“Therefore exposing them to the wonders of nature and the breath-taking sceneries helps a lot in that regard. Hiking is where one can test both their fitness levels and endurance,” he also says.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, he says people get depressed, stressed and anxious, adding that everybody from all walks of life is affected one way or the other.

For one to attain a sense of direction in life, he says hiking can be an ideal place to come and restore all the senses to order.

“From a scientific point of view, it has been proven that human beings form part of nature, life originated from nature, hence, humans are a large part of this phenomenon.”

Perfection of balancing, walking over small rocks, the brain adapts by secreting certain hormones that coordinate the body and feet to balance as one is walking, these, he says are the many benefits one gets from hiking.

Again, he says it brings that good feeling to the body.

Earth-Lovers Hiking Club accommodates all characters of people but is quite cautious of the language used.

“No offensive or vulgar language is used and political gossip is banned in our club,” Moshabesha also shows.

The Maseru-based club started operating in 2013 with only four members and today the outfit boasts of 250 members.

“We do not encounter too many new challenges because each time we have new participants in a hike, we always applaud them for a job well done and encourage them to join the club to become fulltime members,” Moshabesha says.

Besides challenging nature, the club also does a lot of community development work such as lending a helping hand to needy communities and individuals.

A few years ago, the club raised funds through a cancer awareness campaign in order to buy medication for a lady who had cervical cancer.

In the past week, the members also donated sanitary pads to schoolgirls in Ha Mopeli, Butha-Buthe.
