TODAY's world is full of chaos and constant distractions, hence it is never easy to make time to be alone and think. But nature offers an opportunity for some needed silence and peace of mind. It also offers a vital tool to counter standards of survival in society.

“The more pressure we put on ourselves, the more our health deteriorates. Our minds and bodies need silence in order to regenerate,” says avid hiker, Joalane Molapo who is also a member of the Adventist Athletic Club (AAC).

She says hiking is a great way of reaping the benefits of what nature has to offer.

“The elements mold us into shape and we sweat out our frustrations. As our muscles scream for mercy and our toes grip onto our boots, we seek shade. The shelter of a giant pine tree is a luxurious refuge from the intense sun rays. Leaning against the rugged bark, the ultimate question surfaces - why did I choose to do this?”

Molapo says sometimes the fatigue from everyday life tries to dissuade them from getting outdoors.

“But in the end, the rewards of trekking unknown paths are too great to resist going outside.

“Hiking is nature’s way of giving us the much needed therapy and depending on where we go, it is affordable,” she says.

“As we deeply breathe in the wilderness, the stagnant things seem to fall away. Feeling very much alive, the hike ends with us refreshingly fatigued and yet somehow better equipped to handle life,” she adds.

AAA Hiking Coordinator, Nkemetseng Masoebe says they are a health and fitness club formed to champion healthy and responsible living.

“You know, epic views, fresh mountain air, the sounds and smells of Mother Nature, are all experienced through hiking,” she shows.

Hiking connects one with nature - Hikers

She says on July 4, they will be hiking from Ha Palipali in Mafeteng to Matsieng, Moreneng.

She says the plan is to reach individuals, who do not like running, but enjoy hiking.

Masoebe says hiking connects one with nature, from normal life, a new environment altogether to refreshing the mind both physically and psychologically.

Many studies have proven the beneficial effects of exercise on mental health and one’s outlook on life.

Physical activity induces the release of endorphin (a powerful chemical in brain) which energises the spirit, making one feel happy.

What is great is no matter the shape one is in, they can reap these benefits from a small hike.
