IT all started 15 years ago when Neo Seeng Diaho first began reciting poetry in high school, at Sefika High and little did she know that in future, she would become a celebrated poet and a gifted storyteller.

The National University of Lesotho (NUL) graduate in Environmental History and English Language has recently published a novel titled - “Life, a roller coaster ride.”

“It is a fiction novel. The main character meets several challenges in tertiary, including fighting cancer, miscarriage and marital issues. The book can be bought at the Lifestyle Books in Pioneer Mall, Maseru,” she explained on a local radio station, adding however, that she has not yet published her poetry book.

The 30-year-old writer, who used to work as a presenter at People’s Choice FM says she developed her courage and self-esteem by performing in front of crowds in high school.

Diaho who hails from Maseru says she got the inspiration to write from award-winning South African poet, actress and writer, Lebo Mashile, who she used to watch performing on television.

“That woman (Mashile) is artistic and good at what she does. I enjoy emulating her,” she confesses.

The soft spoken Diaho whose humble personality can be felt through her self-created poems, has performed in numerous poetry sessions including one organised by the Ultimate FM aimed at raising funds for children in need.

“I have always loved to write. One of my favourite poems is called – ‘The sky is my canvas’. It is a piece I wrote after a friend asked me to put something together for him, he actually wanted to impress a girlfriend. I sat down and thought about what a man could say to a woman he has feelings for,” she says.

The poem talks about a man who is deeply in love.

“If there was anything like a world wall, I would paint a picture displaying all my thoughts about you and let everybody know,” she says, reciting a paragraph from the poem.

To become a good poet, Diaho says being patient, creative and knowledgeable are vitally important.

“Keep pushing; make plans that will help you pursue your passion. That is your dream, so find the people who can assist you to achieve it,” she says, advising other youth who aspire to become reputable poets as well.
