MASERU – Parading before an international audience that comprised some of the royal monarchs from across the globe was a gratifying experience for Miss Lesotho 2019, Palesa Makara.

The Khubetsoana born Makara, 23, describes her experience in Thailand as both overwhelming and an eye opener.vThe events she participated in included two gala dinners, the Simply Exceptional and the Dragon gala dinners hosted by the Chao Phya Abhai Raja Foundation.

The dinners hosted by the chairperson of the foundation Count Gerald van der Straten Ponthoz Gerry were held in the Thai capital Bangkok on September 11 and 12.vThe intention was to highlight the roles Thailand, Lesotho, and Belgium play in the diamond and jewellery industries. vMakara was invited to the glitz events as a guest of honour.“Attending both events was truly gratifying as each day I got the opportunity to become a ‘show stopper’ and gained experience as well as exposure of a life time,” she said on her Facebook wall.

The first dinner, which was held at the Siam Kempinski Hotel, was also attended by Their Majesties King Letsie III and Queen ’Masenate Mohato Seeiso, Her Royal Highness Princess Lea of Belgium, the Thailand Royal Highnesses Prince Naquiyuddin Ibni Tuanku Ja’afar and Princess Nurul Hayati of Malaysia among a total of six royal monarchs.

“Without doubt, the presence of Miss Lesotho at the event filled the hearts of both Their Majesties and Basotho with great joy,” observed Count Gerry.vMiss Lesotho 2019 appeared in The Irresistible Show, featuring numerous dancers, performing on a musical creation of DJ Aopsher Srijongjai. She was dressed by Thai fashion designer Jaque Varazatiravatt and students of Chiangrai.

Speaking about her exhilarating experience on the international catwalk, Ms Makara described her stay in the Asian country as mind-blowing, saying Thailand was rich in culture, heritage and hospitality.

Other highlights of the exhibition included the Mouawad Dynasty, a record-breaking diamond from Russia, and the Majestic, a master piece crafted with diamonds from Lesotho. Ms Makara was crowned Miss Lesotho 2019 on March 2, at a pageant held at the Maseru Avani Hotel.

The home economics graduate from the Lesotho Agricultural College (LAC) is currently studying towards a degree in environmental health with the National University of Lesotho (NUL). She will represent Lesotho at the Miss World 2019 on December 4. The pageant which is in its 69th edition will be held in London, United Kingdom where the reigning Miss World Vanessa Ponce of Mexico will hand over the crown to her successor.
