MAFETENG - Leader of opposition Democratic Congress (DC) Mathibeli Mokhothu has threatened to topple the coalition government under Prime Minister Thomas Thabane through a vote of no confidence when Parliament reconvenes in August.

Mr Mokhothu accused the 4x4 government of being an enemy of democracy, saying that his party was ready to oust Dr Thabane. Mr Mokhothu was yesterday speaking at a DC rally that was held in Qalabane, Mafeteng. Parliament was last month closed indefinitely although an agreement has been reached by government, opposition parties and the South African Development Community (SADC) facilitator to Lesotho to reopen it on August 5 in order to deal among others with the Bill on reforms. Mr Mokhothu told multitudes of DC supporters that the party was increasing its membership.

“In every country, the youth have a positive impact on issues of economic and social development,” he said, adding that DC executive committee made a perfect choice by choosing a youth to lead the party. He took a swipe at the government by depriving local wool and mohair farmers of their rights to sell their products where they wished. “There is no sign of economic growth under the administration of the 4x4 government because there is prevailing high unemployment rate in the country,” he said.

The government, he also said failed dismally with the school feeding programme where suppliers are not being paid on time, adding that the teacher’s outstanding wages also dealt the education system a low blow. “Education plays a key role towards imparting essential skills that contribute in the economic growth. Tertiary institutions are coerced to retrench teachers due to a reduced subvention from government. The government also fails to provide international bursaries for students pursuing specialised courses not offered in Lesotho.”

Mr Mokhothu further criticised the government of failing to provide electricity, water sand not constructing roads in Qalabane. “The government always claims to be broke while it is actually misusing public funds through expensive travelling expenses for senior ranking officials in the ruling government,” he said. He added that Dr Thabane should be immediately removed from power as he was meddling with the judiciary by sacking judges.

Speaking at the same occasion, DC chairman in Qalabane Zello Khots’e said they were working hard to attract more membership into the party. Present at the rally among others were former party leader and former Prime Minister Dr Pakalitha Mosisili along with his wife Mme ’Mathato and DC deputy leader Motlalentoa Letsosa.
