Tourism minister, Chief Joang Molapo on Saturday February 16 inaugurated the Bangladesh Poetry Corner at the State Library in Maseru. “The contribution of Bangladesh people in the country has been felt among Basotho for many years. By establishing this poetry corner, that contribution improves the cooperation and tightens our bonds even further, stronger and for better,” he said. Chief Molapo expressed gratitude to the Bangladesh community and said their decision to have the poetry corner at the library was an investment on Basotho youth.

Bangladesh poetry corner established
He said: “I hope that this poetry corner will motivate citizens of both countries to exchange cultures.” Speaking at the same event, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Lesotho, Shabbir Ahmed Chowdhury expressed hope that the poetry corner would cement the existing relations between the two countries. He said: “Although both countries share bonds of cooperation in political issues and other areas, there is need to share culture. This occasion marks the beginning of future relations in other areas too.” On behalf of Bangladesh community in Lesotho, Dr. Mirazur Rahman said the initiative was prompted by a need to keep their culture alive wherever they are.

The poetry corner, he said, was launched with the aim to enhance relations through cultural exchange and mutual sharing of literary works of intellectuals from the two sister countries. “If the two countries can unite and work together, literature will develop through exchange of poetry, drama and music,” he observed. Bangladesh community was established in 1994 and so far has about 300 members who work in hospitals and engineering departments, among others.
