THE Ministry of Transport will once again put into use vehicle’s number plates bearing the Basotho hat emblem (Mokorotlo), replacing the ones with the Code of Arms.

This after a gazette for the amendment of the Act to change the emblem was released this week.

The Commissioner of Transport, ’Mathabo Tšosane said it is estimated that printing of the new number plates will resume during the second week of August.

“But we do not know if the manufacturer will be able to supply equipment on time due to recent riots that occurred in South Africa,” she said.
However, Mrs Tšosane said all preparations have been completed, adding that samples for new number plates have already been approved and the supplier is ready.

She said the ministry has already made a schedule on how to work with members of the public during the process.

Earlier, the Minister of Transport Tšoeu Mokeretla had explained that M21 million from the consolidated fund will be spent on the project.

He however, showed that car owners whose registration plates are still valid will switch to the new number plates without paying any fee.

He said the Coat of Arms was not supposed to have been used in the first place as it is only utilised by the office of His Majesty the King.

The ministry introduced the new vehicle number plates about a year ago with a new format that include the Coat of Arms and six digits after phasing out the previous ones. In addition, vehicles for Members of Parliament (MPs) were also provided with new registration number plates. LeNA
