A MOHALE’S Hoek police officer who allegedly killed his wife and later staged a car accident which he claimed killed her has confessed to the murder.

Police Constable Lebohang Moletsane who is expected to appear in court when police investigations into the case have been finalised was granted bail by High Court on March 9.

The court strictly warned him to adhere to his bail terms and avoid interfering with Crown witnesses.

It is alleged that on February 20, after a heated argument with his estranged wife, Moletsane, 37, stabbed the woman to death with a knife before bundling her body into his vehicle.

He later drove the car off the road, staging a fatal car accident.

He is also charged for defeating the ends of justice in that he unlawfully moved his wife’s body from the scene of crime without reporting the incident to the police and pretending that she had perished in the car crash.

After his wife who was a nurse in a hospital in Mohale’s Hoek died instantly from multiple stab wounds, the police officer is alleged to have put her body in his car and transported it from the crime scene in Thoteng, Mohale’s Hoek to Tšenola in Maseru.

It is further alleged that when he was somewhere in Tšenola, Moletsane drove the car off the road, staging the accident that he later claimed to have killed his wife.

But police investigations that later ensued revealed that the dead woman had not died from the accident and that her body had been moved to the location her husband’s damaged vehicle was found.

It also emerged from the investigations that the woman had instead been stabbed with a sharp object, resulting in her death. The investigations further revealed that the woman was already dead when the car she was found in allegedly crashed on the side of the road in Tšenola.

Moletsane was later arrested and charged with the murder, although he maintained that his wife had perished in the car accident.

It later emerged that before this last incident, Moletsane had earlier been arrested and remanded in custody by the Mohale’s Hoek Magistrate’s Court for assaulting his wife during a previous argument.

Although details into what eventually happened to the case remain unclear, the man was however later released on bail by the same court.

Details of why the woman was subsequently killed also remain sketchy, but it is clear that at the time of her death, she was separated from her husband.

It is also alleged that the accused police officer who has a history of mental problems was among others also involved in a previous arson case.

He made his maiden appearance in the Mohale’s Hoek Magistrate’s Court on February 26 for the murder and was remanded in custody.
