LERIBE – Residents of Ha ’Matau were on Sunday morning shocked to find the body of a Butha-Buthe police officer lying next to his overturned vehicle.

It is believed that the diseased driver, who was alone in the badly damaged Honda Fit, must have fallen asleep while he was driving. People who rushed in to assist said no traces of attempts to stop the vehicle before it flipped over were visible at the crash site. “The car appeared to have been coming from the direction of Maputsoe travelling on the newly constructed road that joins the Main North 1Road at the Ha ’Matau T-junction. It was supposed to have turned either left or right but it veered straight off road and plunged into the nearby forest,” said Teleko Leluma who lives close by.

Other residents claim that around 3am, they heard a big crushing sound coming from the other side of a donga through which the forest runs. “The sound must have been caused by the car as it mowed down the trees in the forest,” said another villager. Police who later attended the scene were also shocked to discover that the deceased was one of their own who was stationed in Butha-Buthe.
