MASERU - High Court judge, Justice Tšeliso Monaphathi, is expected on February 7 to hear why the First Lady, ’Maesaiah Thabane, wants the court to stay a warrant of her arrest which was issued by the Maseru Magistrate’s Court earlier this month.

The warrant was issued after ’Maesaiah failed to report herself before the police for questioning in connection with the death of Prime Minister Motsoahae Thabane’s other wife, Lipolelo Thabane.

’Maesaiah is believed to be hiding somewhere in South Africa after she allegedly skipped the country to avoid arrest. Lipolelo was shot dead by unknown gunmen in June 2017 - two days before her husband’s inauguration.

The fatal shooting occurred at the gate of her Ha ’Masana residence on the outskirts of Maseru.

The Crown in the application however, wants ’Maesaih to be ordered back to Lesotho and appear before court.

She is also required to confirm whether or not she authorised the proceedings before court and the signature on the application is really hers.

She is further expected to tell the court the identity of the Commissioner of Oaths who commissioned her application. Advocate Koili Ndebele who represents the Crown in the matter informed the court that there is information that ’Maesaih is hiding in Ficksburg, Free State.

He said the First Lady had already skipped the country when the main application was made, describing her as a fugitive who is running away from justice.
