POLICE have arrested a gang of four robbers that is responsible for armed robberies that occurred in December in which two Chinese supermarket owners were robbed a total sum of M585 000.

Police reports show that in the first incident that occurred on December 2, the suspects stormed a supermarket in Selakhapane, Khubetsoana and made away with cash worth M185 000.

According to police spokesperson Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli, the suspects in the second robbery in Mazenod stole the shop owner’s Ford Ranger twin cab van which had cash to the value of M400 000 in the glove compartment.

Mopeli said the four suspects who were armed with firearms arrived at the store at around 6pm and took the vehicle at gunpoint.

The car, he said was later found abandoned along the Airport road.

“A 9mm pistol and a single round of ammunition were found in the abandoned vehicle,” he told a press briefing held at the police headquarters on Monday morning.

The suspects he said included a 38-year old man of Ha Khitione, Maseru who is believed to be the mastermind of the robberies.

The other three suspects Mopeli said claimed they were hired by the man as henchmen and were each paid M10 000.

Police seized a total of M21 000 from the three men upon their arrest and the suspects explained that they had already spent the rest of the money.
