The Government of Lesotho has reached a consensus to resort to private sector as a viable solution to alleviate unemployment levels in Lesotho. This comes after a series of visits by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Habofanoe Lehana, and representatives from LNDC to various production factories at Tikoe industrial estate on Wednesday. The purpose of the visit was to note challenges faced by manufacturing industry especially those that could lead to either retrenchment of employees or a complete shutdown. The most common challenge that most of these production sites face are pressure to meet deadlines as well as maintaining quality on the global standards. They said last years’ protests affected their business relations with their clients hence the decline in orders. Addressing the media, Minister Lehana said they were open to help these manufacturers find more stable market for their products as that would in turn guarantee an increase in employment while lessening chances of retrenchment. He further added that they have secured an extension on the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) trading terms to span all the way to 2025. The managing director of Leo Garments pty (Ltd), Sam Lee, advised the panel to resort to the South African markets as the American market has reflected an increase in trading tariffs thereby becoming quite expensive. He pleaded with the government to elevate production standards by improving local production infrastructure as a tool required to wrestling the global markets. The two parties have committed themselves to hold regular monthly meetings to monitor progress. Lena
