MASERU – A Ha ’Mamathe man who allegedly assaulted his cousin to death after the latter killed their 94-year-old grandfather with a hammer yesterday appeared before the Berea Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder.

It is alleged that last week Wednesday, the deceased, aged 31 clashed with his late grandfather over the old man’s pension money. After he allegedly knocked him dead with the 16 pounds hammer, the man fled the homestead and hid himself somewhere outside the village. But fellow villagers who were hot on his heels allegedly found him and apprehended him with the intention of handing him over to the police.

But the suspect’s 29 year-old cousin intercepted the search party and assaulted him to death with a stick. The man later surrendered himself to the police. It later emerged that the suspected hammer killer had sometime in 2017 killed his grandmother in a similar fashion using a hammer, when she asked him to find a job. The case against the accused cousin is expected to proceed in court as soon as police investigations have been completed.
