Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Lesego Makgothi said the King's visit comes after an invitation by the Cuban vice president Her Excellency INES Maria Chapman Waugh during her official visit in Lesotho in March last year. Makgothi said the gesture was to show appreciation for position or support by Lesotho of rejection of illegal and criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade unilaterally imposed on Cuba by the United States (US) government. He said during his visit in Cuba, His Majesty will also meet Basotho students studying in that country. The King is also expected to request Cuba to extend education scholarships to Basotho students in other fields particularly agriculture and veterinary.
