THE long awaited trial in which five police officers and a former cabinet minister are charged with the murder of Police Constable Mokalekale Khetheng will finally be heard on November 9.

The accused include Senior Superintendent Thabo Tšukulu, Senior Inspector Mabitle Matona, Inspector Mothibeli Mofolo, Sub-Insp Haleokoe Taasoane and Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Tšeliso Moerane along with the former Minister of Defence Tšeliso Mokhosi.

The six are alleged to have murdered Khetheng during an incident that occurred on March 26, 2016 in Ha Mokhalinyane on the outskirts of Maseru.

The hearing date was set on Friday and the presiding judge, Justice Charles Hungwe showed that the matter should be given first preference and should start at any cost.

The scheduling of the hearing date was postponement on several occasions for various technical reasons which appear to have subsequently abated.

Both Mokhosi and Moerane were released on bail by the High Court while the others await trial behind bars.

Mokhosi is also the deputy leader of the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD).

Moerane has since turned into a state witness.

At the time of his murder, Khetheng who was based in Mokhotlong was visiting his home village of Sebothoane in Leribe.

After his arrest by Leribe police, he allegedly disappeared and evidence before court shows that he was handed over to police and army officers from Maseru.

Tšukulu was the officer commanding the Leribe police while Moerane was in charge of the entire northern region of the country.

It is further alleged that Mokhosi’s vehicle was used to transport Khetheng from Leribe to Maseru.
