MASERU - In a week of high drama in Lesotho following reappearance of Mrs. ‘Makarabo Mojakhomo, who was alleged to have disappeared from police custody on May 31, a Lawyer who represents the Mojakhomo family ‑ Advocate (Adv.) Letuka Molati was on Monday taken for questioning at the Police Headquarters in Maseru. In an interview, Adv. Molati said he was called to clarify some of the points which he included in the letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) informing him about Makarabo’s stance in relation to her alleged escape from police custody. Regarding the allegations that he was involved in Mojakhomo's disappearance, Adv. Molati vehemently and unequivocally rejected the claims, saying “I am not in any way associated with Makarabo’s escape”. He added that the allegations are a ploy to discredit him, noting that he was reliably informed that some of the people associated with Facebook blogger, Makhaola Qalo are high ranking members of the police who are implicated in the matter. According to him, there are no reasons why he could have helped Makarabo to escape since her fraud case “is petty” and she might win it, pay fine or restore the property she is suspected to have wrongfully acquired. In addition, Adv. Molati said he was not surprised with the allegations since Makarabo’s case involves senior authorities. However, he noted that detailed information will be in a sworn statement in which his client will narrate what happened. On the other hand, Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli disclosed in an interview that Adv. Molati was not arrested but was called in for questioning in relation to Makarabo’s case. He added that he was not kept in custody, but was released after questioning. Meanwhile, Adv. Molati on Monday wrote a letter addressed to COMPOL where he indicated that Makarabo instructed them to inform the COMPOL that she did not escape from police custody, but she was abducted with the direct help of the police from the Police Headquarters. He further indicated in his letter that she instructed him to inform the COMPOL that when the time is right, she will come to Lesotho to answer criminal charges if there are any against as she believes in her innocence until proven guilty before a court of law. According to Adv. Molati, as stipulated in his letter to COMPOL, Makarabo was advised not to disclose her whereabouts until such time that she has been put in proper witness protection because if her version were to prevail, the very high ranking people in Lesotho, civilians and also high ranking police officers will probably face criminal charges. He therefore stated in the letter that he advised Mojakhomo to file a sworn statement in which she narrates what happened then he will forward the statement to COMPOL upon receiving it. Concurrently, the Deputy Commissioner of Police Keketso Monaheng, who was the Acting COMPOL when Makarabo allegedly escaped from police custody, handed in his resignation on Monday. Lena
