THE Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) says the theft of copper cables in some villages around Maseru and other districts still continues at a high rate.

The remarks were made by LEC Public Relations Manager Makhetha Motšoari on Monday, following recent reports of copper cables theft at some houses in Ha Abia, Maseru.
He said recently, the utility company received reports from residents of Mokhethoaneng in Berea, Mohale’s Hoek and parts of Maseru, asking for the company to urgently address several cases of copper cables theft in their areas.

Mr Motšoari said the company is currently holding public gatherings nationwide to warn the public about the escalating theft and the importance of taking care of LEC equipment among others.

The company, he said has now resorted to using aluminum cables when making new connections in villages as they are not easily stolen.

He further urged members of the public to be vigilant and ensure safety of their cables and report perpetrators so that they could be brought to book.
