EVERY Mosotho expects to access electricity as one of the key services to ease everyday lives, but some of the communities in the country are marginalised.

The Ketane Constituency in Mohale’s Hoek is one of many that seem to be forgotten for provision of key service delivery.

Around 2011/12, an electricity supply project worth M4million began in Ketane.

The project was anticipated to supply electricity to more than 200 households in Malone in villages including Lebenkeleng, Lipereng, Moreneng and Thoteng.

But earlier this month during the launch of the Agricultural Census Pilot in Ha Pokola, Ketane, the Minister of Development Planning, Selibe Mochoboroane was shocked to discover that the residents of that village had not benefitted from the service in which the government had spent M4million.

Commenting on the upsetting situation he encountered, the minister said it was disconcerting that tax payers were not benefitting due poor service delivery, adding it had become the norm that most of the public projects were left incomplete.

Mr Mochoboroane said it was high time that the government through relevant ministries made follow –ups on development projects most of which were either under- performing or incomplete.

He further showed that relevant experts had not been identified for maintenance of generators.

Member of Parliament for the Ketane Constituency ’Marefiloe ’Musi confirmed that the M4million project that began nine years ago had since become a ‘white elephant’.

The challenge with the project, she said is that there is no transport to deliver fuel to Ketane, adding that due to long distance, the fuel might also be too risky to transport.

Mrs ’Musi therefore appealed to relevant stakeholders to opt for other means such as solar system to complete the project.

She said she had made several follow ups with relevant stakeholders but to no avail.

She was, however, hopeful that Mr Mochoboroane would now collaborate with the relevant ministries to ensure the completion of the project.

According to ’Marorisang Khiba, a residence of Ha Nohana in Ketane, the community has never benefitted from the project since its inception in 2011.

“The community of Mahloane is stressed because most of its houses have been badly damaged,” she said, adding that she was forced to vacate her own house because it was no longer habitable after it was also vandalised.
