BOTSWANA President Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi’s visit to Lesotho on Wednesday was charged by among others to broaden the scope of existing bilateral cooperation as well as present Botswana’s candidate, Elias Mpedi Magosi, for the position of the Southern African Development Community (SADC)’s Executive Secretary.

Upon his arrival on Wednesday morning, he began by paying a courtesy call to His majesty King Letsie III in Matsieng, before coming to Maseru to exchange a few ideas on matters of mutual interest.

The visit further served as part of the ongoing meeting that President Masisi has been holding with his counterparts in the SADC region after assuming office to further strengthen relations and friendship between Botswana and other SADC countries.  

“Lesotho is home away from home. I am here because I am a Motswana who is following in the traditions of his forefathers. It’s in keeping with this tradition that we are here. To review conditions of each other’s well-being as people and nation states.

“We are also here to advise one another on socio political situations, as well as update and enhance the friendship and the cooperation and solidarity for mutual benefit. In doing so, I beautifully paid my courtesy and respects to His Majesty King Letsie III before coming to Maseru to exchange a few ideas on matters of mutual interest,” Dr Masisi revealed during a short media briefing in Maseru on Wednesday.

He said he also came to talk to those that are charged with the management of affairs of Lesotho to remind each other of what it is that the two countries can do together.

“And I am quite happy to say that Prime Minister Majoro and I have reached a point of agreement where we agreed on many key areas and possible collaboration between the two countries.

“More specifically, I came to present our candidate, Botswana has a candidate for the position of Executive Secretary for SADC and his name is Mr Elias Mpedi Magosi. We hope it will be a successful election and affording the opportunity to interact with Lesotho on matters of concern for both of us,” Dr Masisi added

The two countries further discussed issues related to the COVID-19 situation and explored common solutions to the problems presented by the pandemic.

Dr Masisi is the fifth President of the Republic of Botswana. He served as the 8th Vice President of Botswana from November 12, 2014 to April 1, 2018. He was a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly for the Moshupa-Manyana constituency from 2009 to 2018.
