Between normal and below normal rainfall is expected throughout the country with the possibility of normal to warmer than normal temperatures between July and September.

This is according to a seasonal weather outlook report released by the Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS) yesterday. According to the report, occurrences of dry conditions, sunny and cloudless days, together with clear, frosty and very cold nights are expected. “At this time of the year, the sub-continent is dominated by sinking dry air from predominant sub-tropical high pressure cells over the interior,” states the report.

It shows that moderate to heavy rainfalls which were reported on May 8 and resulted from deep westerly wave spelt the end of rains experienced in March and April. “Although there was a series of weak cold fronts which swept over the southern parts of the sub-continent, the month of June experienced dry weather as no rain nor snowfall were observed,” says the report.

It adds: “Effects of cold fronts were to bring slightly cooler south-westerly air cooling down day time temperatures.” The report further shows that temperatures continued to remain warmer than normal as warm days were experienced in May and June, adding that the first frost occurrence was observed on May 27 in the lowlands. The LMS has undertaken to continue advising Basotho on impending weather hazards, which might pose a risk to life and property. The meteorological body further advises the nation to stay alert for further periodic updates.
