A male factory worker was on Monday morning admitted at the Tšepong Hospital with serious injuries after he was ran over by a hit a run vehicle during a fresh factory workers strike that erupted earlier that day.

The man believed to be in his mid-30’s was part of workers who had blocked the Thetsane road all the way from the Tsetsane Industrial Area to Lesia.

One of the workers who witnessed the accident said the driver of the lorry lost control of the vehicle before it plunged into a group of people who were marching in the middle of the road.

“The victim was in that group and after he was knocked down, the truck fled the scene. We immediately hired a 4+1 taxi to take him to Tšepong where he was admitted with serious injuries,” the woman who identified herself as comrade Lepitikoe said.

The accident she said occurred around 11am as the picketing workers were moving from one part of the Thetsane Industrial Area to another to join other picketers.

The workers are on strike demanding a 20 percent salary hike as opposed to the 6 percent offered by their employers.

Last week Friday, factory workers unions cancelled their demonstration that was scheduled for that day after police turned down their request to march.

The Deputy General Secretary of the National Clothing Textile and Allied Workers Union (NACTWU), Tšepang Makakole said although they were not allowed to take to the streets, they would do everything in their power to secure the required permit in order to continue with their plans.

He said starting from Friday morning; no factory worker was expected at work as they would be picketing outside their factory gates until they had a permit in their hands.

The workers also want the government to immediately release a 2020/2021 gazette in respect of their salary increment.

“The Minister of Labour and Employment Moshe Leoma says he has taken the gazette to Cabinet and we have no idea how long it will take there. We will remain on the streets until our concerns have been heard,” one of the workers who refused to be identified said.

“”The government does not take us seriously but next year, all political leaders will be here at the industrial area enticing us to vote for them again,” the woman also said.

The striking workers were finally dispersed by police using water cannons.
