MASERU – The lock-down has been extended by two weeks, ending on May 5, Prime Minister Motsoahae Thabane announced on Tuesday.

He urged Basotho not to relax as all are still at risk to contract the deadly virus.

“The government is aware that the number of those contracting the virus is alarming, especially in South Africa,” Thabane said, commending the SA government for all initiatives made against COVID-19.
He said earlier this week, the government of Lesotho met a South African delegation to discuss means to fight COVID-19 together.

He noted that during the coming two weeks, the government will ensure acquisition of medical supplies such as oxygen ventilators, patient monitors and PPEs, to build capacity of quarantined and isolation centres, screening and testing of higher risk population areas and the security sector to enforce COVID-19 regulation among others.
He urged the public to be patient and abide by the government Gazette which will be issued in order to legalise this initiative.

He said the gazette will clearly state the types of businesses that will keep operating during the extended lock-down period.

He asked all to observe set healthy protocols that include social distancing, staying at home and maintaining high levels of personal hygiene.
He called upon all to protect vulnerable groups in their various communities, prevent gender-based violence and other criminal activities, reminding all that prevention is better than cure.
He emphasised the importance of remembering to pray daily for global peace.
Lesotho's initial lockdown started on March 29 and ended on April 21 during which time movement was restricted in a bid to combat the spread of the COVID-19 in the country.
