MASERU - Prime Minister Thomas Thabane presented a progress made by Lesotho at the 39th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit of Heads of States and Government in dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

This was revealed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations Lesego Makgothi after Mr Thabane arrived from the summit yesterday.  The summit which took place from August 17 - 18, was preceded by the SADC senior officials' meeting of August 9 to 11, the ministerial meeting held from August 13 - 14 and the SADC Organ Troika senior officials, ministerial summit of August 16.

Mr. Makgothi said the weekend meeting welcomed the enactment of legislation to establish the National Reforms Authority (NRA) in Lesotho.  Among others he said the summit called upon all stakeholders in Lesotho to remain committed to the reform process.  He said the SADC facilitator to Lesotho Justice Dikgang Moseneke was also commended by the summit for the effective facilitation. 

He said the next step for the NRA is to be discussed at the Senate, indicating that the country was also commended for involving all stakeholders as well as its political will.

According to the SADC Communiqué, at the summit, the president of Tanzania Dr John Pombe Magufuli was elected as chairperson of SADC and president of Mozambique Filipe Jacinto Nyusi as the incoming chairperson of SADC. The summit also elected the president of Zimbabwe as the chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, while the President of Botswana was elected as an incoming Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

The theme for the summit was “A conducive environment for inclusive and sustainable industrial development, increased intra-regional trade, and job creation”.

SADC is a Regional Economic Community comprising 16 member states which include Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
