A letter penned to Thabane this Monday by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Paseka Mokete, is the second communication to the premier in two months seeking his side of the story over his suspected link to the 2017 killing of Lipolelo, who was assassinated by unknown gunmen near her Ha ‘Masana home in the outskirts of the capital, Maseru.
A second wife of three of Thabane’s wives, Lipolelo won a legal case in which she sought to be considered the official First Lady as divorce proceedings between the two were yet to be finalised by the courts – she was confirmed the First Lady by the High Court of Lesotho, though the Thabane-led government never accorded her the status. She was killed two days before Thabane’s inauguration in his second stint as prime minister.

Thabane’s current wife, ‘Maesaiah, was on January 10 also called to appear before the LMPS to assist with police investigation on the same murder, summons she ignored despite police efforts; she has since fled the country and a warrant for her arrest has been issued by the High Court of Lesotho, she remains at large.
Twice since Lipolelo’s case came to the fore, Thabane has announced his decision to retire as prime minister, though the date for his exit remains unknown. He has promised during these announcements that he will not interfere with police investigations into Lipolelo’s murder.
