MASERU – The president of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has been elected the new chairperson of the African Union (AU).

Ramaphosa who is taking over from his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was elected to head the continental body for 2020 at the 33rd Ordinary session of the AU currently underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

African leaders are attending the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the AU.

Lesotho’s contingent is spearheaded by the foreign affairs minister, Lesego Makgothi in the absence of Prime Minister Motsoahae Thabane who is reportedly attending to some pressing government issues at home.
