The rural electrification projects is continuing its rolled out in the country with more and more rural villages benefiting. This was recently announced by the Minister of Energy and Meteorology, Mokoto Hloaele. He said the project served as part of the government’s effort to ensure service delivery. “The government is committed to bringing services to the people. Rural electrification project serves as part of efforts to ensure service delivery,” he said.


Hloaele was recently speaking during the launch of the project at Nokong in Mosalemane Constituency Berea District, explaining the project as part of an initiative aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – the goals of which include an affordable and clean energy. Hloaele added that the rural electrification project would be implemented steadily until it covers all households countrywide. He urged the communities to establish electricity schemes. He noted that such schemes would make easy for government to implement and roll out electrification project countrywide.

The contractor who has been awarded the contract for this project has been urged by the government to ensure transparency during the implementation of the project. Nokong Electricity Scheme Committee Mokone Lipholo said the villagers were more than delighted that their efforts to be connected with electricity would eventually become a reality. About 670 households from eight villages of Nokong Moreneng, Masenkeng, Taung and Nts’irele are set to benefit from the project. It is expected to be completed in July. The project, which is supported by the Lesotho Government, amounts to over M12 million.
