Sadc summit welcomes enactment of NRA

MASERU - The 39th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit has welcomed the enactment of legislation to establish the National Reforms Authority (NRA) in Lesotho.

The Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania called upon all stakeholders in Lesotho to remain committed to the reform process. The meeting also commended the SADC facilitator to Lesotho, Justice Dikgang Moseneke of South Africa for effective facilitation. The summit, which took place on August 17 - 18, was preceded by the SADC senior officials' meeting from August 9 to 11, ministerial meeting on August 13 - 14 and the SADC Organ Troika Senior officials, Ministerial and Summit on August 16.

The SADC Communiqué further reveals that during the summit, president of Tanzania Dr John Magufuli was elected as the incoming Chairperson of SADC. The troika for the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation comprises of President Edgar Lunga of Zambia as Chairperson of the Organ, President Joao Lorenco of Angola and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe as the incoming Chairperson of the Organ. 

The communique says the summit also noted the overall decline in food production in the region, for the 2018/19 crop season and urged member states to implement comprehensive multi-year response plans to tackle the recurrent droughts and food insecurity to boost agricultural production. It states that the summit noted progress made on the implementation of SADC industrialisation Strategy and approved the Protocol on Industry, which aims to promote the development of a diversified and globally competitive industrial base.
