JUDGE Sakoane Sakoane was on Thursday sworn-in as the new Chief Justice of Lesotho.The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Royal Palace in the presence of His Majesty King Letsie III, Prime Minister Dr Moeketsi Majoro, Speaker of the National Assembly Sephiri Motanyane, Deputy Prime Minister Mathibeli Mokhothu, cabinet ministers, senior government officials and the judge’s family.


Led by Justice Tšeliso Monaphathi as he took an oath of office, Chief Justice Sakoane pledged to administer justice to all persons alike without fear, favor, or prejudice according to the laws of Lesotho.The Christian Council of Lesotho (CCL) opened the ceremony with a word of prayer reading in the book of Leviticus 19: 15 which reads, “Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.”  

The CCL warned the new Chief Justice that the position he is chosen for is not for his personal benefit but the good of all Basotho. Chief Justice Sakoane was born in Ha Sakoane, Berea on January 10, 1960. He did his primary education at St. Agnes Primary School from 1967 to 1973. He then proceeded to St. Agnes High School where he completed in 1978.

He took two years to work to assist his parents in educating his siblings before commencing his tertiary education.
From 1981 to 1985 he studied for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law (BA Law) at the National University of Lesotho (NUL). Immediately thereafter, he enrolled in an LLB program with the same university and completed in 1987.

He served in the Ministry of Law as a Crown Counsel from 1987 to 1997. His duties included inter alia provision of legal advice to the government perusal of dockets and giving directives to the police and prosecution of cases in superior courts.

It was whilst he was serving in the Ministry of Law that he enrolled with the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom (UK) for a Masters of Laws degree from 1992 to 1993, specializing in Human Rights in International Criminal Law.

Chief Justice Sakoane joined the Law Reform Commission of Lesotho from 1997 to 2004 as its Counsel and Secretary. In June 2014 he joined the bench and served as an Acting Judge until he was confirmed as a substantive judge on July 07, 2016.
