THE reopening of schools has caused great confusion among teachers associations as the government fails to distribute COVID-19 protective equipment (PPE) to schools before classes resume, like it had promised.

The Secretary General of the Lesotho Association of Teachers (LAT) Letsatsi Ntsibolane said even though the schools are open, there will be no progress in their work in order to avoid the spread of the coronavirus due to the lack of PPE.
He said the schools will however remain open as per the government’s directive, adding it would be irresponsible of them to shut the schools down notwithstanding the risks both the teachers and learners are exposed to.

Mr Ntsibolane advised fellow teachers to interact cautiously with the learners as their work environment has now turned into a threat to them.

The Minister of Education and Training Ntlhoi Motsamai had earlier promised that the government would distribute PPE to schools before classes resumed but the initiative according to LAT has still not materialised.

The normal school calendar was disrupted by the total shut down of the country that was first announced by Prime Minister Dr Moeketsi Mojoro in March 2020 in a bid to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. LeNA
