In all regions of the world, according to reports, women and girls are subjected to violence because of their gender. Despite the fact that different social, cultural and political contexts give rise to different forms of violence, its prevalence and its models are remarkably constant.  According to Gender Links, “gender has a substantial impact on the form violence takes, the circumstances in which it occurs, the consequences, and the availability of legal, medical and social remedies. Because of violence in the southern Africa, to be precise in Lesotho, where laws are criminalized, women are deprived, either totally or partially of the enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedom and this automatically hold the country back when it comes to national development goals.”

The promoters said in a joint statement that they found it crucial that join together their efforts in employing technology as the means to eliminate gender-based violence since it is highly reachable in daily lives in the modern world. The Vodacom Lesotho Foundation and Vodacom Lesotho ensured that Nokaneng app. is connected in their network provider and their customers can use it for free as their main aim as the network is to connect people.

The Nokaneng Application, which is now available in the Google Play Store, has features that include information on gender-based violence, services and rights, as well as protection tools such as a sound alarm and emergency SMS. Furthermore, the Application creates a safe space for conversations, support and advice, including from counsellors linked to the Lapeng Centre - the government’s safe house and one stop centre for survivors of gender-based violence. On the other hand, when testing this application on early versions, Gender Links engaged more than 100 women across Lesotho, and they found out that Nokaneng has the potential to empower women and girls. It also helps them to maximize their protection and break the silence about the violence.
