A member of the Lesotho Principal Association (LESPA), Mathafeng Moteuli is hopeful that school teachers and learners will finally get vaccinated this week as per the Ministry of Health’s promise.

This after local schools from pre-schools to tertiary institutions reopened on Monday after the winter vacation.

Schools were abruptly closed on June 28 due to the escalating COVID-19 cases in some schools in Leribe.

“Through consultations with the Ministry of Health, the association had earlier agreed that learners and teachers would get their jabs this week as soon as schools reopened as they are readily accessible at schools than in villages,” Mr Moteuli said.
He said the vaccine roll out was supposed to be in centres or clusters, adding that they have already provided the health ministry with lists of teachers and learners eligible for vaccination.

He was, however, quick to add that by Monday afternoon, there was still no correspondence from the ministry in respect of the vaccination.

“We hope that by Tuesday afternoon, the roll out will have kicked off, as the learners and teachers need to be protected against the virus especially now that the schools have re-opened.”

The Ministry of Education and Training, he said has supplied schools with sanitisers and disinfectants like Jik to use while they wait for the vaccine.

For her part, the Communications and Publicity Manager of NACOSEC, ’Mateboho Mosebekoa said she has not yet received schedules for the roll out of the Johnson and Johnson (J&J) vaccines for schools in Maseru, adding that this week they are doing mop up for the AstraZeneca vaccine.
