MASERU – Prime Minister Motsoahae Thabane’s senior private secretary Thabo Thakalekoala has shot down claims that the premier has been barred from attending the 33rd Ordinary session of the African Union (AU) owing to his alleged involvement in the death of his estranged wife, Lipolelo Thabane.

Thakalekoala said the person behind the rumour does not understand the mechanisms of AU and how the continental body operates.

Dismissing the allegations as both baseless and unfounded, he said that somebody has their own agenda, which is aimed at confusing the nation.

He said Dr Thabane was unable to attend the summit because of pressing government issues which needed his attention.

“AU is an independent organisation and all its members are equal before the international law, hence it cannot interfere with domestic issues of its member states,” he noted.

He said the PM has every right to attend the summit as long as he is still the head of government.
African leaders are attending the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the AU currently held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
