‘Mamorallo Tjoka came too close to winning the Two Oceans Marathon after emerging second after South Africa’s Gerda Steyn in a race held in Cape Town on Saturday. Tjoka was among some of the local athletes vying for the 56 kilomitre Ultra marathon which saw only Mabothile Lebopo coming out fifth in the male category. Other athletes who made Team Lesotho were Teboho Sello, Warinayne Lebopo, Moeketsi Mosuhli and Lebenya Nkoka who finished in second position in the previous edition of the marathon. The Lesotho Amateur Athletics Association (LAAA) spokesperson could however not be reached for comment on Team Lesotho’s performance at this year’s ultra-marathon as his phone was unavailable. There was R250,000 first prize money at stake at the Two Oceans marathon plus an additional one million up for grabs to any athlete for both men and women who will break the course record of 3:03:44 or 3:30:36 respectively. The 2019 Two Oceans Marathon had a few disruptions before the gun gone off according to reports which indicated that the route of the ultra-event had to be changed due to the threat of protest action just one day before the event. According to a statement released by race organisers on Friday morning, the decision to alter the route comes in the wake of a sobering meeting with the South African Police Services (SAPS) during which credible concerns regarding runner safety were raised. All stakeholders in attendance were reportedly informed that the threat of disruptions along the Chapman’s Peak section of the ultra-marathon route needed to be taken into account. Lena
