THE two suspects who attempted to rob a foreign businessman with a toy gun near St Michaels in Roma on Tuesday are expected to appear in the Maseru Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The men who include a Lithoteng Police Constable were arrested by soldiers and members of the public before they handed over to the Roma police.

Police reports show that the suspects who were armed with a toy gun had mounted an illegal roadblock near Mahlabatheng.

Their target according to police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli was the Pakistani businessman who owns a supermarket in Ha Ntsi, Nazareth on the outskirts of Maseru.

Mopeli said the victim was driving from Ha Ntsi to Maseru when the suspects pounced on him.

After stopping him at the roadblock, Mopeli said the suspects robbed the man a bag full of an undisclosed sum of cash.

But during the scuffle that ensued, he said the Pakistani fought back and managed to retrieve his bag and fled to a nearby field where people were working.

The workers in the field chased the suspects and they were spotted by a group of soldiers in vehicle that was passing by.

Through the assistance of the members of the public, Mopeli said the soldiers arrested the two men before handing them over to the police.

Video clips of the arrest went viral later on Tuesday showing the two suspects being assaulted by both the soldiers and an angry mob of civilians before they were bundled onto the back of a military van.
