MASERU - The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres has called on everyone to support and protect young people who are standing up for human rights.

Mr Guterres made these remarks on Tuesday in his official statement to mark the Human Rights Day.
He said globally, young people were marching, organising and speaking out for the right to healthy environment as well as for the equal rights of women and girls.

He said they also did the same to participate in decision-making and express their opinions freely.
“They are marching for their right to a future of peace, justice and equal opportunities,” he noted.
He pointed out that every person was entitled to all rights: civil, economic, social origin, gender, sexual orientation, political or other opinion, disability or any other status.

Mr Guterres showed that this year, the Human Rights Day recognised and celebrated the role of young people in bringing human rights to life.
The theme for the 2019 Human Rights Day is, “Youth Standing up for Human Rights” and is intended to celebrate the potential of youths as constructive agents of change, amplify their voices and engage a broad range of global audience in the promotion of rights.
Human Rights Day is celebrated annually on December 10 as the day on which the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
