Following the issuing of public notices, Water and Sewage Company (WASCO) presented its proposed tariff application increase of 8.5% to relevant stakeholders at the hearing held at New Central hotel in Qacha's Nek. On his presentation, Pefole Pefole from WASCO indicated that the increase of water tariffs is a result of expensive equipment they use and the upgrade in water systems. He noted that the increase will be on domestic and non-domestic usage including the standing charge of M10.00 on Band A (consuming between 0-5000 litres per month). Mr. Pefole further explained that the increase aims at improving provision of services and expand on areas where there are no services. Some members of the public and stakeholders opposed the increase in that, there was no increase made by the government on public servants wages and that by itself have made things tough for everyone. Again they said WASCO did not collect its debts, and it does not respond to water leakages reported to them on time and that result in loss of water. They said WASCO should work on the strategy to control usage of water by installing prepaid meters where by water will be cut automatically when one has exited his monthly subscription. The Chairperson of the tariffs in pricing committee Ntsie Maphathe pointed out that Lesotho Electricity and Water Authority (LEWA) seek the public opinion on such issues before it can conclude. He said it is important to meet up with consumers to also have a saying because they are the main users of water and other components it comes with. Mr. Maphathe explained that after all, the public consultations, views and opinions of the public will be viewed and thereafter the final decision will be published. On his remarks, 'Muso Jane, speaking on behalf of the District Administrators office, thanked LEWA and WASCO for sharing with them the news. He said it was indeed vital to always consult with consumers on matters that concern them before making any decisions. He said the motive was to build good working relations with every stakeholders and reach amicable decisions. Lena
