MASERU (TmgLive) – The Lebakeng Constituency Member of Parliament Semano Sekatle has labelled his former party, Democratic Congress (DC) for which he was the secretary general, a sinking ship. Speaking at a press conference in Maseru on December 18, Sekatle said “I left to ensure my safety and that of my family from ill-treatment where there were floods of accusations against me and others by the senior party members and at secret meetings held in our absence.”

According to Sekatle, himself and others were treated as outsiders. In the 2017 general elections, Sekatle and his wife were candidates for Lebakeng and Qacha’s Nek constituencies where they respectively garnered the highest number of voters than any other candidate for their party. “A lot has happened in the DC. Things have not been as rosy as they seem. I was treated badly, especially by the executive committee which made me feel unwanted hence my decision to leave the party,” he said.

By ditching the DC and set to cross the floor to the ruling party, observers say it’s obvious that his wife, who accompanied him for the swearing in ceremony and gave him a cordial kiss after taking oath, will cross with him. However, Mrs Sekatle has so far been playing her cards to her chest. For ditching the DC, Sekatle has been showered with praises and insults from all angles. Some say his good and timely move is for the benefit of the country owing to his long political and public service experience while others accuse him of being selfish and greedy.

To the surprise of both supporters of the DC and its rivals was the public announcement of one of the party’s young garrulous, Fusi Ramantai, that he is also defecting from the opposition party to the ruling party. The conference chairperson of DC, Motlalentoa Letsosa, denied that Sekatle was ever ill-treated. “He only left because of the position he has been offered by the ABC,” he said.
