ORGANISERS of the biggest motorbikes racing event in Africa, the Motul Roof of Africa have postponed the show to November 2021 as Lesotho remains indefinitely under Level 3 lockdown, hence there is too much uncertainty surrounding the pandemic.

In a joint statement released on Wednesday, Live Lesotho announced that the decision to reschedule the annual event was reached following final consultations with representatives of the Government, the Lesotho Off-Road Association (LORA) as well as the Lesotho Sport and Recreation Commission this week.

“It has then been requested that the 2020 Motul Roof of Africa no longer takes place. Due to these necessary restrictions, the 53rd edition of the “Mother of Hard Enduro” has, therefore, been postponed until 2021,” the statement reads in part.

It adds: “We are aware of how disappointing this news will be to riders and their teams, but unfortunately the current situation has not stabilised enough and there is simply too much uncertainty surrounding the pandemic at present. We owe it to everyone involved, and especially the people of our host country, Lesotho, to ensure that the Motul Roof of Africa does not present any additional COVID-19 risks, and, unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that in the current circumstances,” said the Managing Director of Live Lesotho Charan Moore.

Moore added that they have already communicated the decision to the event sponsors and the title sponsors - Motul have indicated that they fully support the postponement until next year, by when it is hoped there will be a much greater degree of certainty surrounding the pandemic and any ongoing precautions required to contain it.

2020 Motul Roof of Africa postponed

“We thank and appreciate the sponsors, riders, LSRC, Live Lesotho and LORA team members for their support and hard work in a collective and positive energy into making the 2021 Motul Roof of Africa the best yet,” Moore said.

Live Lesotho further announced that all riders who had secured and paid for a place in the 2020 event can carry this forward to the 2021 edition at no additional costs or alternatively, can opt for a full refund.

The organisers also confirmed that the dates for next year’s event will be November 2 – 6, 2021.

The Roof of Africa has been run every year since 1967, except in 1998 due to political riots which occurred in Lesotho.

The race attracts nearly 400 competitors and is contested by the top competitors from across the world as well as all the top contenders from the sub-continent.

The event injects an estimated M100 million into Lesotho’s economy during that week alone.
