MASERU – The Lesotho Boxing Association (LeBA) publicist Rethabile Mohale says the committee understands that the nation is now living in abnormal times, hence it has decided not to resume boxing activities until things get back to their usual state in respect of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an interview with Metro, Mohale said: “We cannot risk our players and their family lives by letting the sport resume under these conditions. Boxing is entirely a contact sport which means it would be hard to control the issue of athletes touching each other as they box.” He said it will as well be difficult to observe social distancing as one of the measures considered for protection against Covid-19 when playing the sport.

Mohale agreed that Covid-19 hinders their planning as the newly elected LeBA executive committee because they have only had a chance to meet just once since being elected into office in February. The committee, he showed met just once and did not have time to plan other matters because immediately thereafter, the virus hit the African continent.

“Our first meeting was meant for handover by the interim committee members including Sebuisiso Keketsi and Lehlohonolo Sneiman handed over the office to the new committee and we were compelled to deal with those matters already on table going forward,” he said.

He said matters which were already on table included the selection of the national team to the All Africa Games, appointment of the team manager as well as selecting a team for the Region 5 Games which they all achieved.

“We managed to deal with all the above mentioned matters. We selected the All Africa games team and the team manager Lehlohonolo Sneiman, the Region 5 Games team and its team manager Rethabile Mohale and the main task of making a yearly plan,” he said.

He showed that their main target which was to draft a yearly plan was fulfilled. “We drafted and submitted the plan to Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission (LSRC) as the association was already late in doing so,” he said. He further noted that the committee has achieved several milestones notwithstanding working under the unfamiliar circumstances induced by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“So far the committee has registered two new clubs, namely the Qacha’s Nek boxing club and the New Millennium boxing club and is in the process of registering the Teyateyaneng boxing club. The pandemic interrupted us while we were in the process of preparing the senior team for the second Olympic qualifiers scheduled for Paris in France this year,” he also said.

Mohale who is also a member of the Region 5 boxing committee said upon being hit by Covid-19, the region 5 boxing committee met and discussed a way forward for boxing in the region. “The regional committee decided that the national coaches regularly provide players with exercises they should do to keep their bodies fit,” he said. He also mentioned that the Region 5 committee decided that countries should make a plan of how the sport would be played while observing Covid-19 regulations in the member countries.
